New restaurant opens at site of former Volunteer Park concession stand

LAKEBAY, WA — As of March 4, 2017, the iconic concession stand at Volunteer Park has officially transitioned from a seasonal, volunteer-run booth into a full-time, year-round eatery known as The Snack Shack.

The transformation, overseen by Key Peninsula Parks, marks a significant shift for the park’s facilities. For years, the stand operated primarily during Little League games and summer tournaments. Now, under the ownership and operation of Rachel Velez, the Shack is serving the broader community six days a week.

“We wanted to create a consistent food option for everyone who visits the park,” said Velez. “Whether you’re finishing a round of disc golf, using the skate park, or attending a 'Cinema Under the Stars' event, we want to be here with fresh, hot food.”

The menu stays true to its roots, offering classic American diner fare. Visitors can expect juicy cheeseburgers, Nathan's Famous hot dogs, and a variety of snacks. Velez also noted plans to introduce daily specials, including homemade soups and sandwiches, to cater to the year-round lunch crowd.

The building itself pays tribute to the area's rich athletic history. A large mural on the south wall depicts a 1923 Key Peninsula baseball club, a detail that influenced the decision to maintain the "Snack Shack" name and baseball theme for the new business.

The transition to a leased private operation allows Key Peninsula Parks to focus on park maintenance while ensuring high-quality food services are available to the public. The Snack Shack is located at 5514 Key Peninsula Hwy N and has quickly become a local favorite for its welcoming atmosphere and "Taste of Tradition."
